AI in Healthcare

How Hospitals of the Future Will Use AI

Healthcare remains to be one of the top areas for investing in AI

The exponential rise of the big data and the introduction of the remote services have already made a massive impact in the healthcare industry.

Electronic health records, telehealth and cloud-based diagnostic applications help doctors to get a ubiquitous 24/7 access to the information they need.

As one of the top areas for AI investment, the healthcare industry is constantly evolving. This means that hospitals are always interested in the newest innovations to help optimizing their work.

Here I’d like to talk about the current impact of AI on the modern healthcare system and what it will mean for hospitals in the future.

AI Care Robots

Japan has always been only a flight away from the future. And there is no wonder that some of the most curious innovations are not only tested but are already incorporated there.

For instance, Japanese hospitals are already relying on some support provided by the AI Care Robots.

How it can help?

  • they can carry food and help a patient to feed himself
  • they can transfer patients to and from their beds
  • they can track the correct intake of the prescription pills
  • they can identify the signs that a patient is unwell and needs emergency help.

An important notion is that these Care Robots are not meant to be a substitute for nurses, doctors and caregivers. There is nothing better than human touch. Instead, care robots can support the healthcare system in providing a better and quicker help to patients.

AI Doctors

Despite the popular misconception, artificial intelligence (AI) is not a cybernetic intelligence, but rather a system of algorithms based on machine learning. In healthcare, this algorithm allows to fix the imperfections of traditional medicine and to improve the quality of service delivered.

How it can help?

There are many things that could disturb the doctor. It could be a lack of knowledge of a specific and narrow medical area, a large amount of data in a patient’s health records or simple fatigue. This might result in the wrong diagnosis and thus, the wrong treatment.

Whereas, AI Doctor is pretty versatile.

It can analyse symptoms, detect rare diseases, suggest personalized treatments, improve diagnosis, predict risks, detect abnormal results and even help with drug discoveries.

AI Doctors can scan the patient’s electronic health records much quicker and diagnose the illness with expert accuracy. There are already cases of how Medical AI identified eye diseases and skin cancer as well as specialized doctors.

Similar to the AI Care Robots, AI Doctors will not replace the real doctors. However, doctors who will use the help from AI most certainly will replace the ones who don’t.

Therapeutic Animal Robots

Animal Assisted Therapy is a proven practice that helps in reducing stress, anxiety or in some cases aggression. Animals make patients feel calmer and even increase their desire to socialize.

Yet, real-life pets may sometimes bring various concerns from hygiene issues like allergies to personal ones like fear of dogs or cats.

This problem has brought a modern-day solution — Animal Carebots/ Robotic Pets.

How it can help?

This upgraded version of animal-assisted therapy eliminates hygiene-related and behavioral risks. Usually, these robots interact with patients by build-in senses. These could be tactile senses, light, temperature, audio senses and others.

Animal Robots were introduced more than 15 years ago and are now supporting nursery homes around the World.

When we say, the future is round the corner, it’s wrong.

The future is already here. The further we go, the more to see.
